01

What is it

"What McMaster-Carr Part Are You?" — a quiz that matches you to a real part from the catalog and gives you a tagline, a few quotes, the parts you're compatible with, and your nemesis.

02

Why I built it

A culture project. We had a lot of inside jokes about the catalog and no good way to share them, so I put them in a format people would actually send to each other.

03

What makes it interesting

Real part numbers, real catalog humor. The compatibility and nemesis logic is what makes it worth sharing. Without it you just get a static result screen nobody screenshots.

04

Difficulties & tradeoffs

Every result had to feel true to that part rather than randomly assigned, which meant writing a lot of content per part. That was most of the work.

05

What I built it with

Static site in HTML/CSS/JS with custom quiz-matching logic.

Result screen

The result card, and the matching logic running underneath it.

Duct Tape result card with part number, tagline, and customer reviewsResult
Every result is a real part, with a real part number, in-stock badge, and "customer reviews" as quotes.
Frequently bought together and compare to sections showing compatible and clashing partsMatching
Answers are tracked against a map of parts, so you also get who you pair well with and who you'd go chaotic with.
